And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.

Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead. Yahweh who was the head of the theocracy had (2 Samuel 7:1) Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead. Yahweh, who was the head of the theocracy, had (2 Samuel 7:1) guaranteed, by a solemn promise to David, the regal succession to his dynasty; and in virtue of this divine arrangement Rehoboam was the legitimate heir to the throne. His accession accordingly took place in Jerusalem, on the demise of his father.
