Psalms 107:10

Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;

Such as sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death -- i:e., in a dark and terrible prison: an image of the extreme misery of Israel (; ; ). So also "the shadow of death" - i:e., the thickest gloom ().

Being bound in affliction and iron - i:e., with the iron bonds of affliction; figurative of affliction which as it were binds one down so as to admit of no release. Compare ; , margin; . The verb to the nominative in this verse follows in . 'These should praise the Lord.' etc.
