The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. "The stone" is the foundation-stone of the temple laid by Zerubbabel, an earnest of the whole temple, in building which the adversaries of Judah thwarted him, but he was enabled 'by the Spirit of the Lord' to "bring forth the head stone thereof, with shoutings ... Grace, grace, unto it" (; Zechariah 4:6: cf. Ezra 3:10; Ezra 4:1). Messiah is the antitypical "stone," the "foundation" laid by the Father for the spiritual temple, the Church (; ); rejected by men, but precious to them that believe (1 Peter 2:6); first foretold by Jacob, , "the stone of Israel."
