But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin and of Abner's men, so that three hundred and threescore men died. Joab had in his army only veteran soldiers, tried by many severe battles and steeled by many privations, while Abner had merely the remains of an army which had but recently been defeated by the Philistines, and which may otherwise have been weakened and discouraged.
