And David spake unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote the people, for the Lord opened his eyes and made the invisible visible to him, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly, upon him alone the blame really rested; but these sheep, the members of his people, what have they done? Let Thine hand, I pray Thee, be against me and against my father's house. He begged the Lord to visit the judgment upon him and his family, but to spare the people, whom he considered innocent.
