And David said unto Michal, in a gentle, but very effective reproof of her pride, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy father and before all his house, the sons who might have been his successors, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. Saul had been rejected by God on account of his pride, and here the same ugly trait showed in his daughter. But David had been placed ahead of Saul and his own family, hence he adds: Therefore will I play before the Lord, willing to abase himself in the presence of Jehovah.
