Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, for Daniel honestly had the welfare of his sovereign in mind, and break off thy sins by righteousness, repudiating all the transgressions for which Oriental monarchs were noted in favor of the exercise of true righteousness and justice, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor, to those in any kind of tribulation, if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity, or, "if thy present good fortune is to endure. " A complete change of heart was necessary on the part of the king, together with a consistent practice of the highest virtues as a proof of his regeneration, in order to avert the threatened punishment on the part of the Lord.
