What is man that he should be clean, and he which is born of a woman that he should be righteous? Eliphaz here takes up a point which he had broached in his first discourse, 4:17-20, and which Job himself had conceded, 14:1-4. If Job admitted man's mortality and frailty in general, he should also concede his own particular wickedness.
