“For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.”

And the reason that they are to flee is because these are the days of vengeance, the days when God visits the people who have rejected Him with judgment. For the days of vengeance compare especially Deuteronomy 32:35 LXX where they are a part of what will happen as a result of breach of the covenant; Isaiah 61:2, where the day of vengeance follows the coming of the great prophet and the proclamation of the Good News; Hosea 9:7; Jeremiah 46:10. God has had many days of vengeance, but as Jesus will go on to say, these particular ones will be long and protracted.
