“Then will the King say to those on his right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingly rule prepared for you from the foundation of the world.' ”

Here Jesus is for the first time called King. For the shepherd King see Ezekiel 37:24. For the Son of Man as King see Matthew 13:41, where it is also directly related to the judgment. It is noteworthy that He does not address them as ‘you righteous', but as those who have been ‘blessed by His Father'. That is what has made them acceptable (compare Matthew 5:3; Matthew 13:16). And because they have been so blessed they are to ‘inherit'. An inheritance is something that is bestowed by a benefactor on those whom he chooses because of their relationship. Inheritance therefore indicates what is given and received in total undeserving. And as a result these are to enter into the everlasting Kingdom under His Kingly Rule. They are to inherit eternal life (Matthew 25:46).
