Nehemiah 11:1. The Population of Jerusalem and Judah. This section consists of lists of the dwellers in Jerusalem and in the provincial towns of Judah.

Nehemiah 11:1 f. The need of increasing the population of Jerusalem was obvious from what is said in Nehemiah 7:4, for the bulk of the people lived in the provincial towns and in the country villages (cf. Nehemiah 7:73).

Nehemiah 11:3. The lists here given enumerate the chief laymen dwelling in Jerusalem (Nehemiah 11:3), the priests (Nehemiah 11:10), the Levites (Nehemiah 11:15; cf. 1 Chronicles 9:14), and the gatekeepers (Nehemiah 11:19); in Nehemiah 11:20 some miscellaneous notes are added.

Nehemiah 11:25. Then follows a geographical list of the provincial towns in which the children of Judah dwelt; Judæ an towns (Nehemiah 11:25), Benjaminite towns (Nehemiah 11:31).
