THE BOOK OF OBADIAH.

OBADIAH, or the servant of the Lord, a name given to Christ by way of eminence. Isaiah 42:1. Some of the rabbins think that Obadiah was a proselyte of Idumea, because his prophecies specially regard that country; others, that he was the steward of Ahab. 1 Kings 18. Some have thought him to be the deceased husband of the widow that cried in trouble to Elisha. 2 Kings 4:1. Well, if his name be written in the dust here, the record in the book of life abides for ever. He flourished in the times of Hosea, Isaiah, Amos, and Joel. The substance of what he says is found in other prophets. Jeremiah seems to have followed him closely, in the forty ninth chapter of his prophecies.
