πιστεύω γὰρ τῷ θεῷ, for I believe God. And he implies ‘I would have you do so too, that you may be of good cheer.’ In the midst of danger, few things could be more inspiriting than such an address. And by this time all in the ship must have learnt that they had no common prisoner in the Jew who had appealed from his own people to the Roman emperor.
