ἐπεῖχεν, gave heed. The verb requires τὸν νοῦν, or something similar, to be supplied with it. The sense is ‘turned (his attention).’ Cf. Sir 34:2, ὁ ἐπέχων ἐνυπνίοις, ‘he that pays attention to dreams’; and Acts 3:18 of the same chapter, τίνι ἐπέχει; ‘To what does he pay attention?’
