ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου. Leviticus 19:18, ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.’ The second clause does not occur in Levit., but was a Rabbinical inference. ἐχθρούς, all who are outside the chosen race, the etymological force of the word. Heathen writers bear testimony to this unsocial characteristic of the Jews. Juvenal says it was their rule—

‘Non monstrare vias eadem nisi sacra colenti,
Quæsitum ad fontem solos deducere verpos.’—Sat. XIV. 104.
