The three chief oppressors of Israel during the period of the Judges are mentioned. (1) The Canaanites, who were led by Sisera, general of the army of King Jabin. Their chief city was Hazor (stronghold) situated on the high ground west of the Lake of Merom, where Jebel Hadîrehperhaps still preserves the name. This oppression lasted for 20 years. See Judges 4:5. (2) The Philistines. See Judges 3:31; Judges 10:7; Judges 13:1, and Note IV. p. 238. (3) The Moabites under Eglon. See Judges 3:12-30.
