a little coat The Heb. mĕîldenotes a kind of long upper tunic, worn by kings (1 Chronicles 15:27), prophets (1 Samuel 15:27), men of position (Job 2:12), women of rank (2 Samuel 13:18). The term is applied to a part of the High Priest's dress, the robeof the Ephod (Exodus 28:31), and it is suggested in the Speaker's Comm. that "the mention of the ephod and the robe as worn by the youthful Samuel taken in connexion with his after acts seems to point to an extraordinary and irregular priesthood to which he was called by God in an age when the provisions of the Levitical law were not yet in full operation."
