Ahithophel has justly been regarded as a type of the arch-traitor Judas. Even if the words "mine own familiar friend in whom I trusted which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me" (Psalms 41:9, quoted in John 13:18), were not written of Ahithophel, the parallel between his treachery and suicide, and the treachery and suicide of Judas, is too striking to be neglected.
