Melzar the melẓar, -melẓar" being the title of some officer, or attendant, of the court. What officer is intended is, however, uncertain, as the word has not hitherto been satisfactorily explained. Friedr. Delitzsch thinks that melẓarmay be the Ass. maẓẓaru, -keeper" (as in maẓẓar bâbi, -keeper of the gate"), the ltaking the place of the doubled (cf. βάλσαμον from bassâm); and Schrader agrees that this explanation is possible. The term evidently denotes some subordinate official, appointed by the chief of the eunuchs to be in personal charge of Daniel and his companions.
