Whether the prophet speaks of Egyptian idolatry in the early times of Israel's life from historical sources may be uncertain. Such idolatry at this period seems nowhere else spoken of; comp. the list Judges 10:6. Possibly as he charges the people with idolatry in Egypt (ch. Ezekiel 20:7; Ezekiel 23:3; Ezekiel 23:8; Ezekiel 23:19; Ezekiel 23:21) they may not have shaken themselves clear of it even in the period of the Judges. The connexion of the country with Egypt was at all times very close.
