Eve Heb. Ḥavvah, that is, Living, or Life. The man is represented as calling his wife by this name, because she was the mother of the whole human race. The word is evidently of great antiquity; for it is not found with this spelling in Biblical Hebrew, but in the form of ḥayyah. The sound of the name "Ḥavvah" (Eve) was sufficiently close to that of the root meaning "Life" (ḥay) to suggest connexion. Whether ḥavvahwas an old form, or a name taken over from the primitive people of Palestine, we have no means of deciding.
