the God of Beth-el i.e. the God who appeared unto thee at Beth-el; see Genesis 35:7. For the mention of the pillar and the vow, see Genesis 28:18-22. By the words "I am the God of Beth-el," the Angel is shewn to be not a created angel, but Jehovah Himself in a manifested form; cf. Exodus 23:20-21, "Behold, I send an angel before thee … my name is in him." See notes on Genesis 16:10; Genesis 21:17-18; Genesis 22:11-12. The Hebrew text is ungrammatical: LXX ὁ θεὸς ὁ ὀφθείς σοι ἐν τόπῳ θεοῦ.
