O God, &c. Jacob's prayer consists of (1) an invocation; (2) a reminder of the promise; (3) a humble acknowledgment of mercies; (4) an entreaty (a) for protection, and (b) for the fulfilment of the covenant promise. Jacob's prayer, followed by the symbolic scene of the wrestling with the angel (Genesis 32:24), is an indication that, through discipline, the patriarch's character has been made ready for the exercise of the faith of which it was capable, and for submission to the Will which it had begun to recognize. The absence of confession of sin has been remarked upon. The self-sufficiency still lingers; see Genesis 32:11.

which saidst The reference is to Genesis 31:3.
