John alone tells us that He had compassionately suggested the difficulty to Philip, watching with gentle irony the trial of his faith ;and that Philip despairingly said that it would cost more than 200 denarii (as we might say $ 10)to procure them even a minimum of food. Philip was "of Bethsaida," but this had nothing to do with our Lord's speaking to him, for he belonged to the westernBethsaida.
