turning away Lit. turning. The word, however, is commonly used of turning away from God and from good. So here: "I called you to turn tome (Proverbs 1:23), and instead, you have turned fromme." Backsliding(R.V.), is less suitable, as denoting a turning away from a position already taken up, whereas "the simple" are regarded as on neutral ground, and not yet having turned in one direction or the other.

prosperity Rather, carelessness (R.V. marg.), the fruit of prosperity. securitas, Maurer. Comp. Ezekiel 16:49, where the same word is rendered, prosperous ease, R.V.
