In contrast to the false teachers, we belong to God. ‘We’ includes all those people who speak the truth about the *Lord Jesus Christ. Those people will listen to the truth. Those who do not belong to God will not believe the truth. We can know the origin of what people say. We know whether it is from God or from evil *spirits. All we need to do is to notice who listens to the message. The Spirit of God is in his people. He will cause them to know what is true.

The true Spirit is God’s Holy Spirit. He lives in God’s people. Those who have this kind of *spirit speak the truth.

There is a false *spirit that comes from the devil. There are also the spirits of people who do not have God’s Spirit. What these say cannot be the true message of God. They teach what is false and they lead people away from the truth.

God is love. He loves us and we should love him (1 John 4:7-21)

v7 Dear friends let us love each other, because love comes from God. All who love have been born of God. They know God. v8 Whoever does not love does not know God. This is because God is love. v9 This is how God showed his love among us. God sent his one and only Son into the world. He came so that we might live by him. v10 This is what love is. It is not that we have loved God. It is that he loved us. God sent his son as the *sacrifice to die for us. He died to take away our *sins. v11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love each other. v12 No person has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us. By this, his love is complete in us.

v13 God has given us his Spirit. Therefore, we know that we live in him. We also know that he lives in us. v14 We have seen that the *Father has sent his Son. We are witnesses that it is true. The *Father sent Jesus to rescue the people of the world. v15 Jesus is the Son of God. God lives in those people who believe this. Those people also live in God. v16 We know the love that God has for us. And we believe it.

God is love. Those who love like him live in God. God also lives in them. v17 This is how love has become perfect among us. We can be confident in that day when God will be the judge. Because as he is, so also are we in this world. v18 There is no fear in love but perfect love removes fear. It is the thought of punishment that causes fear. So, the person who is afraid does not have this perfect love.

v19 We love because God first loved us. v20 Some people may say that they love God. But if they hate their *brothers or sisters, they are lying. They do not love their *brothers and sisters whom they can see. Therefore, they cannot love God whom they have not seen. v21 God has given us this command. Those who love God must love their *brothers and sisters also.

Verse 7

Christians should love each other

We should obey the command and love each other. Love is part of the character of a Christian. The Christian is a child of God. The child of God receives this love from the *Father.

We should love other Christians because love comes from God. God is the origin of this love. God makes us able to love each other although by nature we may not do so.

All those who have this love are born of God. This love is not just an attitude of love. It is a love that acts. Those people who are born of God will love each other. Love proves whether we are born of God. Those who love know God.
