1 CHRONICLES—NOTE ON 1 Chronicles 1:1 A Genealogical Presentation of the Tribes of Israel. The genealogies of chs. 1 Chronicles 1:1 are intended to show the Chronicler’s generation, now existing as the small province of Yehud (Judah) in the Persian Empire, that they are still God’s people Israel and retain their central place in God’s purposes. They are traced from Adam (1 Chronicles 1:1), through the tribes of Israel (chs. 1 Chronicles 2:1), to the community of Judean exiles restored from captivity in Babylon (1 Chronicles 9:2). The genealogies have been structured to show how the Chronicler conceived of Israel:
