1 SAMUEL—NOTE ON 1 Samuel 4:3 from Shiloh. The ark of the covenant had been “in the temple of the LORD” in Shiloh (1 Samuel 3:3). (On the details of the ark, see Exodus 25:10; Exodus 37:1; and illustration.) Moses was commanded by the Lord to put the tablets of the covenant, the “testimony,” into the ark (Exodus 25:16; Deuteronomy 10:5; see 1 Kings 8:9). enthroned. The ark represented God’s actual presence among his people (Exodus 25:22). It showed that he was fighting for Israel. Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD... that it may come among us. The language here suggests that the people were treating the ark disrespectfully.
