Considering David’s elaborate attempt to cover up his act of adultery (vv. 2 Samuel 11:6), it is hardly likely that he made his intention clear when he summoned Bathsheba. Since she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness (“bathing,” v. 2 Samuel 11:2), probably after her menstrual period (see Leviticus 15:19), it is clear that her husband, Uriah, was not the father of the child who was conceived (2 Samuel 11:5).
