EXODUS—NOTE ON Exodus 22:9 In this case, as also in v. Exodus 22:12, a person steals his neighbor’s property by falsely claiming that he himself was the victim of a thief. Then, the person must pay double to his neighbor, which is the standard punishment for theft (see v. Exodus 22:4). The dishonest person would say “this is it” to indicate that “this is the item in dispute.”
