ISAIAH—NOTE ON Isaiah 20:1 In the year. 711 B.C. Sargon (II) was king of Assyria, 722–705 B.C. Ashdod. A Philistine city (see 1 Samuel 5:1). The Assyrian defeat of this city was relevant to “Egypt and Cush” (Isaiah 20:3) because Ashdod had relied on promises of Egyptian support against Assyrian attack. Egypt did not deliver that support.
