JEREMIAH—NOTE ON Jeremiah 40:13 Apparently the former soldiers (vv. Jeremiah 40:7) appreciated Gedaliah. They warned him of a plot against his life involving Baalis the king of the Ammonites, and Ishmael, one of the “captains of the forces in the open country” (vv. Jeremiah 40:7), but he did not believe the rumors. The Ammonites opposed Babylon (Jeremiah 27:3) and would therefore oppose Gedaliah.
