Leviticus 24:17-23

LEVITICUS—NOTE ON Leviticus 24:17 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. This proverbial phrase means “the punishment must fit the crime” (compare Exodus 21:18). The law was intended for judges in a court of law; it was not intended as a way for individuals to “take the law into their own hands.”
