MATTHEW—NOTE ON Matthew 16:13 Caesarea Philippi is some 25 miles (40 km) north of the Sea of Galilee. It had been a center of the worship of (1) Baal, then (2) the Greek god Pan, and then (3) Caesar. At this time it was an important Greco-Roman city. It had a primarily pagan Syrian and Greek population. Regarding Son of Man, see note on 8:20.
