Numbers 13:1 Forty Years near Kadesh. The central section of the book of Numbers 1:1 spans 40 years. During this time the Israelites lived in or near Kadesh (later called Kadesh-barnea; Numbers 32:8), a large oasis about 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Beersheba. It marked the southern limit of the land of Canaan, according to Numbers 34:4. As a result of the rebellion after the spies’ negative reports, God punished the people by making them wait 40 years to enter the land.
