Proverbs 22:17-22

PROVERBS—NOTE ON Proverbs 22:17 The Thirty Sayings of “the Wise.” This section easily divides into 30 distinct teachings, as indicated in Proverbs 22:20. These reflect an awareness of the Egyptian wisdom text, The Instruction of Amenemope, dated to about 1250 B.C. The most significant difference between the two is the devotion to the Lord exhibited in Proverbs 1:1. The identity of “the wise” (Proverbs 22:17) is unknown. Perhaps they are the scholars who assembled these proverbs (possibly under Solomon’s sponsorship).
