πολλοὺς ἄλλους, many others. The construction is very loose. We naturally think of πολ. ἄλ. as depending on ἀπέστειλε = he sent many others, and possibly that was really what the evangelist had in his mind, though the following participles, δέροντες ἀποκτέννοντες, suggest a verb, having for its subject the agents these participles refer to = they maltreated many others, beating some and killing some. So most recent writers. Vide Buttmann, N. T. G., p. 293. Elsner suggests ἀπεσταλμένους after πολλ. ἄλλ. = and many others, sent, they either beat or slew.
