ἤδη : omitted by Mt., but important, as indicating that the business Joseph had on hand that of obtaining and using permission to take down and bury the body of Jesus must be gone about without delay. It was already the afternoon of the day before the Sabbath, προσάββατον, called παρασκευή (here and in the parallels in this technical sense). It must, therefore, be done at once, or it could not be done till Sabbath was past.
