In unfolding in the Prologue the contents of faith, the apostle had adduced two testimonies of John the Baptist (John 1:6-8 and John 1:15); the second contains, as Baur well says, “the idea of the absolute preexistence of the Messiah,” and consequently the true thought of the author that of the divinity of Christ.
