3. Vers. 7-17.

The following discourse must not be regarded as a particular specimen of the preaching, the substance of which Luke has transmitted to us. It is a summary of all the discourses of John the Baptist during the period that preceded the baptism of Jesus. The imperf. ἔλεγεν, he used to say, clearly indicates Luke's intention. This summary contains 1. A call to repentance, founded on the impending Messianic judgment (Luke 3:7-9); 2. Special practical directions for each class of hearers (Luke 3:10-14); 3. The announcement of the speedy appearance of the Messiah (Luke 3:15-17).
