Adonijah’s personal advantages no doubt helped to draw the people to him.

His mother ... - i. e. Haggith bare Adonijah after Maacah bare Absalom 2 Samuel 3:3. The words in italics are not in the original; hence, some, by a slight alteration, read “David begat him.”
