Normally the age and range of the witnesses that support the shorter text (î⁶⁶ a* B C* D L W X P ¦¹ al) would seem to create a presumption that the clause eiv o` qeo.j evdoxa,sqh evn auvtw|/ is a secondary intrusion into such witnesses as a^c A C² K D Q Y ¦¹³ 28 33 565 700 892, followed by the Textus Receptus. On the other hand, however, the absence of the words can be accounted for either as the result of (a) transcriptional oversight because of homoeoteleuton (evn auvtw|/ … evn auvtw|/) or (b) deliberate deletion because of supposed redundancy of thought (yet there is a logical connection rightly expressed between the earlier and subsequent glorification, and the step-parallelism is characteristically Johannine). Faced with this dilemma a majority of the Committee preferred to retain the words in the text but to enclose them within square brackets.
