The general tendency seems to have been to drop auvtou/ after readers had come to regard oi` maqhtai, as needing no identifying possessive pronoun; in the present instance, however, what on this basis appears to be the later reading is supported by the weighty combination of B and D. In order to reflect these conflicting considerations the Committee decided to include auvtou/ in the text, but to enclose it within square brackets.
