The reading supported by the chief representatives of the Alexandrian and the Western types of text involves a certain ambiguity (i.e. does the phrase with dia, qualify luphqei,j or evke,leusen?). In order to resolve the ambiguity copyists inserted de,, thus altering the hypotactic construction (“And being grieved, the king, because of his oaths and because of those who sat with him, commanded [it] to be given”) to the more colloquial paratactic construction (“And the king was grieved; but because of his oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded …”).
