In the account of Matthew (Matthew 20:20; Matthew 20:22), the answer is addressed to them, and Salome appears as an intercessor for them. Either both mother and sons preferred the request, or the mother for the sons. The form of the request is more fully stated here, but in both accounts there appears the same consciousness that what was desired was of doubtful propriety.
