1. Personal Explanations.

This section forms an ‘epilogue' (Meyer), corresponding in matter with the introductory paragraph; chap. Romans 1:8-15. The Apostle first expresses his confidence in the Roman Christians, and, in a partially apologetic tone, justifies his writing to them by a reference to his office as Apostle to the Gentiles (Romans 15:14-16), by a statement of his principle of labor (Romans 15:17-21), which had hindered him from going to Rome (Romans 15:22). He then speaks of his hope of visiting them (Romans 15:23-24), after he had fulfilled his service in carrying alms to the poor saints at Jerusalem (Romans 15:25-29), in which service and hope he asks their prayers (Romans 15:30-32), adding a brief benediction (Romans 15:33).
