Ye younger,— The word Νεωτεροι is used by our Saviour for inferiors, or those who were to be subject; Luke 22:25. It seems here to mean the body of the people. See 1 Corinthians 16:15. Hebrews 13:17. The word εγκομβωσασθε, rendered be clothed, signifies properly, "To clothe with an outer ornamental garment, tied closely upon one with knots;" and refers to the dress of girls and shepherds. So that St. Peter implies by this word, that the humility of Christians, which is one of the most ornamental graces of their profession, should constantly appear in all their conversation, so as to strike the eye of every beholder; and that this amiable grace should be so closely connected with their persons, that no occurrence, temptation, or calamity, should be able to strip them of it. See Parkhurst on the word Εγκομβοομαι.
