We see in Homer, gods, heroes, and princes keeping flocks: such was the occupation of the patriarchs. The Scripture speaks of a prince descended from Esau, who kept the asses of his father. Genesis 36:24. Asses were a considerable part of their substance in Judaea, and persons of the first distinction there commonly rode upon them till the time of Solomon. See Judges 10:4.
