To reading, to exhortation, &c.— It was the custom in the synagogue to read a portion of the scriptures of the Old Testament; and, after that, to instruct the people in the meaning of it, and to give them some useful exhortations. Timothy was to do so in the school of Tyrannus, and to omit nothing of a similar kind; as well as to read the Scriptures privately for his own improvement.
