Wherefore a lion, &c.— By the lion, say some, Nebuchadnezzar is meant: see chap. Jeremiah 4:7. By the wolf, Nabuzaradan; and by the leopard, Antiochus Epiphanes. Others by the lion think that the Babylonians are understood; by the wolf the Medes and Persians; and by the leopard the Greeks: while others again, with more reason, suppose that Nebuchadnezzar alone is here pointed at; violent and courageous as a lion; rapacious, greedy, devouring, as a wolf; swift, lively, and active as a leopard.
